A bit of yoga when traveling is a great way to stay active while on the go. Yoga classes can either be a workout or an active way to unwind without adding unnecessary stress. In fact, locating the nearest yoga studio is usually the most stressful part of a yoga class while traveling! Fortunately, there are many ways to find the nearest yoga studio whether you are in a new area or at home and unfamiliar with the studios where you live. I picked the most convenient method that I’ve found to share with you. To find the closest yoga studio, you can: ask around, look in the phone book, do yoga in the street until someone points you in the right direction… But the fastest way to find the nearest yoga studio would be to use an app. (I know, I know! Just bear with me on this one. I promise that not everything on my blog will be about an app…)
Searching for yoga when traveling…
When I visited Montreal last spring, I was able to locate several yoga studios using the MINDBODY – Fitness & Wellness app on my phone. I used Wi-Fi because I don’t have an international data plan. Using my current location, rather than the name of a particular studio, I entered my search. There were many different options but I chose Moksha Yoga Montreal.
Moksha Yoga Montreal was a short bike ride from where I was staying. Better yet, the studio was having a special — free classes for first time members! My friend and I ended up doing hot yoga seven times during our ten day stay! This made the trip extra-relaxing and helped to balance out all the delicious food I ate while I was there. (By food I mean ice cream from Kem Koba and La Diperie, which have the best ice cream on Earth, holy smokes…)
Where is the nearest yoga studio? Other ways to answer this…
Another app that helps you find the closest studios to your location is called Om Finder. The Canadian activewear company, Lululemon, launched Om Finder in 2013. The app uses info from MINDBODY, Inc. but includes additional social features. Om Finder allows you to invite friends to a class, set up reminders, and get directions. Unlike MINDBODY, however, on Om Finder you cannot book a class or pay online and the app is only available on iOs.
I’ve never used Om Finder or MINDBODY Yoga, which is the yoga-specific version of MINDBODY because I’m usually not interested in just yoga classes. I want to know about all of the workout opportunities near me! Before visiting Montreal, I had used MINDBODY to find a local barre studio on Kaua’i. With the app, I was able to check the schedule, reserve my spot, and pay, all on my phone. Ultimately, the ability to book and pay for a class on my phone is worth more to me than being able to share that info with friends or set a reminder for myself.
When not traveling, I remove the MINDBODY app from my phone; there is only one studio in Kodiak that uses it. But any time I take a trip, I make sure to have it at the ready!
How do you do yoga when traveling? Have you used either of these apps? Do you know of any other useful fitness-finding methods? If you already use the MINDBODY app or end up trying it, let me know what you think!
